Dental/Optical Notice

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING DENTAL AND OPTICAL SERVICES
FOR MEDICAID AND MC+ ADULTS

Effective July 1, 2002, general dental benefits will no longer be a covered service, with the exception of dentures, for adults. Adult dental service coverage will be limited to dentures and treatment for trauma to the mouth or teeth as a result of injury. Services to prepare the mouth for dentures, such as examinations, X-rays, or pulling of teeth will not be covered. Ancillary denture services such as relining, re-basing, and repairs will not be covered. Dentures placed on or after July 1, 2002 will require prior authorization.

Effective July 1, 2002, eyeglasses will no longer be covered for adults, except one pair following cataract surgery. Eye examinations for adults remain covered.

Adults are individuals 21 years of age or older.

This change is effective July 1, 2002, for services provided under both the fee-for-service program and through managed care.

Children who are eligible for MC+ for Kids or Medicaid will still be covered for dental care and for eyeglasses.

More information is forthcoming in a Medicaid bulletin to providers of dental and optical services, and will be posted on this web-site.
