Division of Youth Services Honors Graduates

Springfield — The Missouri Department of Social Services' Division of Youth Services' (DYS) Southwest Region will hold a graduation ceremony tomorrow for a record number of graduates. More than 80 students will receive their high school diplomas or GED certificates in the 12th annual graduation ceremony and job fair. Young people attend class and prepare to take their GED or earn their high school diploma during their time in DYS custody.

"Education plays a vital role in the rehabilitation process," said DYS Director Tim Decker. "One of our goals is to promote and support successful transitions of young people from our care to further education or employment. Having a diploma or GED certificate in hand brings them one step closer to productive adulthood."

Upon entering the system, each student’s educational strengths and needs are assessed as part of a rigorous and comprehensive planning process. Instruction is individualized through a learning plan developed with each student and family.

Since the graduation ceremonies began in 1997, nearly 600 southwest DYS students have earned their high school diploma or GED certificate. Following their exit from DYS, many enroll in colleges, universities, or trade schools while others enter the workforce or the military.
